Seaside surgeon performs first shoulder replacement surgery at Naples’ newest hospital

NAPLES, Fla. (September 22, 2017) – Orthopaedic surgeon Brian Wallace, D.O., of Seaside Surgery Center and the Joint Replacement Institute, performed the first shoulder replacement surgery at Landmark Hospital of Southwest Florida on Friday, September 22, 2017.

Completed in September 2015, the Naples location is the newest of Landmark’s long-term acute care hospitals and one of the system’s two largest, with 50 private rooms. The hospital just opened four surgical suites, equipped with the world’s most advanced video arthroscopic technologies.

The procedure Dr. Wallace performed was a reverse shoulder arthroplasty (replacement). In a conventional shoulder replacement, the implant device mimics the normal anatomy of the shoulder: a plastic “cup” is fitted into the shoulder socket (glenoid), and a metal “ball” is attached to the top of the upper arm bone (humerus). In a reverse total shoulder replacement, the socket and metal ball are switched. The metal ball is fixed to the socket and the plastic cup is fixed to the upper end of the humerus. Instead of relying on the rotator cuff muscles to power and position the arm, the reverse total shoulder replacement relies on the deltoid muscle. The reverse shoulder arthroplasty is a more technical and complicated operation to perform.

Dr. Wallace’s interest in orthopaedics includes the arthroscopic treatment of the shoulder, elbow and knee as well as general orthopaedic care. He also has extensive training in joint reconstruction and fracture care. He currently serves as the team physician for Ave Maria University. He was delighted with the opportunity to work with the Landmark surgical team saying, “I was extremely impressed with Landmark, from the state-of-the-art facility and operating equipment to the friendly and professional staff. I look forward to bringing more cases to this excellent hospital.”
