Shoulder Resurfacing

Shoulder resurfacing is a procedure also used to treat arthritis of the shoulder. Shoulder resurfacing is a less invasive alternative to a total shoulder replacement.

Shoulder resurfacing removes less of the patient’s bone than what is removed during a total replacement procedure. Typically shoulder resurfacing is only performed where the shoulder is damaged. This surgery is usually preferred for patients with arthritis affecting only one portion of the shoulder. During a procedure, ┬áthe resurfacing implant is placed on top and not within the humerus bone.

The recovery time of a shoulder resurfacing procedure varies depending on each individual patient. Patients will have to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise after their surgery. A physical therapy regimen will restore and strengthen the joint after surgery.
