Seaside first ASC in South Florida to acquire Mako system

NAPLES, Fla. (March 20, 2017) – Seaside Surgery Center became the first ambulatory surgery center (ASC) in South Florida to offer Mako™ Partial Knee replacement when it accepted delivery of Stryker’s highly advanced, surgeon-controlled Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery System recently. The Mako System assists surgeons by creating a 3-D model of the patient’s anatomy, enabling them to develop a pre-surgical plan that customizes implant size, positioning and alignment specifically for each patient.

Mako Partial Knee replacement is less invasive than traditional total knee replacement surgery. “Not every patient with knee osteoarthritis needs a total knee replacement,” explains Seaside CEO/Medical Director Robert J. Zehr, M.D. “For some patients, replacing only part of the knee joint is the solution to their pain. This procedure is called ‘partial’ or ‘unicompartmental’ knee replacement and is now a popular and scientifically supported method of resolving the arthritic pain of the knee, preserving much of the structural integrity of the remaining knee.”

However, partial knee replacement can be a challenging procedure to perform accurately on a consistent basis using manual techniques. Enter Mako technology. “The Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery System enables consistent results and more accurate implant placement – which is an important factor in the life expectancy of implants,” says Zehr.

There are other robotic assisted surgery systems available, but Zehr, with more than 25 years of orthopaedic experience in complex joint reconstruction and rehabilitation, chose to become certified in the Mako System for a specific reason. “Real-time live motion data is collected during the intra-operative planning phase and this is used to make the fine corrections in the balance and tracking position of the implants, which other systems just don’t do,” Zehr says.
